HAPPY HOUR UNTIL 8PM.  \nKOKOKO! is a collaboration between a Congolese collective of street musicians who have created instruments out of found objects & French producer Débruit.   \nKokoko is the musical core — electronics\, singers\, dancers\, percussion\, a homemade electric guitar — of an arts collective from Kinshasa\, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo\, collaborating with the French electronic musician Debruit. “Buka Dansa” can be translated as “dance till it breaks” or “break the dance\,” and this track lives up to both choices. The guitar twangs little riffs\, voices whoop and sing and shout\, a smooth synthesizer bass line comes and goes; the perky central beat is disrupted from left and right\, and sudden key changes add a few more swerves. They have been playing and hosting gigs in the DC music scene since 2014\, debuting at local music venues on the U-Street corridor such as Flash\, Tropicalia\, U St Music Hall\, and DC’s Funk Parade. Fort Fairmont’s driving tenant: all music has a time and a place. As such\, they rarely stick to any one genre and have curated events from nu-disco to trap to electronic hip-hop to house and techno. One band stood out by hot-wiring that sound with the subversive energy of some American bands of the era and that band was Swervedriver. They had the liquid distortion of shoegaze combined with the cool swagger of Hüsker Dü\, Sonic Youth\, and Dinosaur Jr – giving them a unique sound and attitude. \nRelocating from Oxford to London\, guitarists Adam Franklin and Jimmy Hartridge\, bassist Adi Vines and drummer Graham Bonnar debuted with a series of landmark Creation Records EPs\, Son of Mustang Ford\, Rave Down\, and Sandblasted. Their full-length debut\, 1991’s Raise\, to this day is hailed by Pitchfork as an album full of “muscular\, scorching guitars” that “still bring the noise like nobody’s business” with Mojo stating that Son of Mustang Ford “remains one of the most glorious tunes to emerge in the wake of the so-called grunge explosion of ’89\, matching Adam Franklin and Jim Hartridge’s motorised guitar-weaving with a beguiling\, below-the-line vocal melody and lyrics that celebrated the joy of wide-open American freeways.” \nThe band toured the album extensively\, including a lengthy US tour with Soundgarden that brought their wall of sound to thousands. However with both Bonnar and Vines leaving the band not long after\, the 1992 EP Never Lose That Feeling looked like it might be Swervedriver’s (albeit scorching) swan song. Then in late 1992\, Franklin and Hartridge demoed a new tune Duress\, recruited drummer Jez Hindmarsh and set about recording a second full-length album Mezcal Head with Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine/Led Zeppelin)\, which included their biggest singles Duel and Last Train To Satansville. Touring extensively again\, this time with Smashing Pumpkins and Medicine and with new bass player Steve George onboard\, their sound was further imprinted on people’s minds. \nMore roadblocks came to be in their way though: highly revered third album Ejector Seat Reservation came out in 1995 but was never released or toured in the US and although the band returned strongly with their fourth full-length 1998’s 99th Dream\, the energy was dissipating and they imploded at the end of an Australian tour resolving to go on hiatus. \nGoing their separate ways – Franklin moved to the US and released solo albums with his band Bolts of Melody – no-one really knew if the band actually was on hiatus or had split entirely. Then came an announcement in late 2007 that they would be performing at the following year’s Coachella and heading back out on the road. Originally reforming with Hindmarsh on drums followed briefly by the return of Bonnar\, they finally settled on Mikey Jones of Heaven and Bolts of Melody and have continued touring and appearing at festivals internationally. \nIn 2013 everything was ratcheted up several notches when Swervedriver released its first single in 15 years\, Deep Wound. Spin Magazine called it a “warm\, confidently roiling return” with Mojo adding “those same distorted pop sensibilities remain reassuringly intact” and the band debuted the song on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” in the States. \nAnd finally the announcement comes that the band has been recording at legendary studios Birdland in Melbourne\, and Konk in London. Their fifth album I Wasn’t Born To Lose You is to be released worldwide in March of 2015. \n

DESCRIPTION:Tickets on sale Friday June 28 at 10am  \nFor some it was all of the live energy\, for others it may have been the massive sleeper success of their 2016 LP but whatever it may be\, Knocked Loose’s arrival in the general public consciousness transcends metal and hardcore and into a new arena entirely.  \nDue on August 23rd\, 2019 via Pure Noise Records\, A Different Shade of Blue is the mammoth and hotly anticipated follow-up to their 2016 debut\, the head-turning Laugh Tracks. Recorded by producer Will Putney\, the new LP was approached slower and more methodically than the band’s last smash effort\, abandoning the previous “live in studio” recording approach for something more deliberate. Under Putney’s direction\, the band cranked out twelve new tracks that deal with all manner of anger\, especially loss in lieu of absence. Vocalist and lyricist Bryan Garris initially felt blocked heading into the studio but eventually found catharsis\, as well as some of his most intensely personal lyrics to date. \nForged on musical bonds built at an early age\, Knocked Loose came together in the small yet relatively formidable hardcore / punk scene of the greater Louisville\, KY area– the same that gave birth to bands ranging from Slint to Breather Resist to Endpoint to Coliseum. And though said scene was relatively strong\, a lack of available bands\, touring parties and scarcity of gigs forced diversity– mixing genres and challenging young ears with new ideas\, approaches and styles. That diversity­ – death metal bands mingling with youth crew\, screamo on the same bill as Am-Rep-style bands and on and on– created the basis of Knocked Loose musically and the genesis for their approach\, an amalgam of heavy influences that never commits to any singular style but maintains a loyalty to the hardcore tradition. \nWhile A Different Shade of Blue reflects the diverse musical influences and backgrounds of Knocked Loose\, it also ups the ante. On the new effort\, the quintet come harder with a more fine-tuned approach toward songwriting\, riffs that would make Trey Azagthoth blush and an added level of vein-bulging fury to tie it into one nasty package. Featuring guest vocals from Emma Boster of Dying Wish and Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die\, A Different Shade of Blue is not only a step forward for the band\, but for hardcore as we know it. While some musical influences are easily identified–Pantera\, Hatebreed\, Obituary and more­– the band’s palette and canvas has expanded by leaps and bounds\, incorporating Gothenburg-style death metal (At the Gates\, early In Flames)\, slam metal (Devourment\,\nDying Fetus)\, blood-thirsty thrash (Sodom\, Kreator)\, black metal (Craft) and the mind-boggling complexity of latter noisy hardcore like Snapcase and Bloodlet. Spanning twelve tracks\, including the massive single “Mistakes Like Fractures” which reared its ugly head in April via 7” single\, A Different Shade of Blue clocks in at a lean and mean 37 minutes\, grabbing the listener by the throat from the jump and slowly tightening that grip for the duration. \nKnocked Loose is the obvious evolution to decades of bands like Integrity\, Disembodied\, Botch and others– total and complete integration between metal and hardcore into a singular\, seamless entity. Since its inception\, hardcore has evolved from the germ of “Slayer actually has punk parts” to crossover to the addition of everything from death metal to rap to shoegaze. Knocked Loose is the proverbial fish walking on land– the end of the evolution\, and possibly the apex of the metallic hardcore punk movement thus far. Ably combining the teeth-clenching hatred of a hardcore band with the unmitigated technicality and ferocity of metal\, Knocked Loose have conceived state of the art hatred– a true melting pot of ideas that combines pit-ready riffs\, memorable songwriting and deviously clandestine melody into a boiling-over pot of vitriol. \nSince 2016’s Laugh Tracks\, Knocked Loose\, comprised of the young Cole Crutchfield (rhythm guitar)\, Bryan Garris (vocals)\, Isaac Hale (lead guitar)\, Kevin Otten (bass) and Kevin Kaine (drums)\, have taken a huge leap\, moving from upstart hardcore-influenced favorites to bonafide key figures of the genre. Their debut offering was a revelation\, taking the world by storm and establishing the band as a major force within metal\, hardcore and beyond. Following the well received effort\, Knocked Loose hit the road and hard. The band is quick to single out turning point tours such as Warped Tour 2017\, a stellar showing at This is Hardcore 2018\, headlining gigs over the legendary Terror and Australia/Japan tours as crucial to their growth\, and while that may be partially true\, the real key component to their success lies beneath all of that– a strong attention to excellent songwriting and a near-undying work ethic.   \nKnocked Loose have doubly proven their ability to write a cohesive and compelling record\, and the band is looking forward to proving themselves yet again at live gigs across the globe\, fan by fan. In an era of burnout\, the title track of her 2017 breakout\, Everybody Works\, remains a balm and an anthem. \nDuterte’s life became a whirlwind in the wake of Everybody Works. After spending her teen years and early 20s exploring an eclectic array of musical styles — studying jazz trumpet as a child\, carrying on her Filipino family tradition of spirited karaoke\, and quietly recording indie-pop songs in her bedroom alone — that accomplished album found her playing festivals around the world\, sharing stages with the likes of Paramore\, Death Cab for Cutie\, and Mitski. \nIn November of 2017\, seeking a new environment\, Duterte left her home of the Bay Area for Los Angeles. There\, she demoed new songs\, while also embracing opportunities to do session work and produce\, engineer\, and mix for other artists (like Sasami\, Chastity Belt). Reckoning with the relative instability of musicianhood\, Duterte turned inward\, tuning ever deeper into her own emotions and desires as a way of staying centered through huge changes. She found a community; she fell in love. And for an artist whose career began after releasing her earliest collection of demos — 2015’s hazy but exquisitely crafted Turn Into — in a fit of drunken confidence on Thanksgiving night\, she finally quit drinking for good. “I feel like a completely different person\,” she reflects. Positivity was a way forward. \nThe striking clarity of her new music reflects that shift. After months of poring over pools of demos\, Duterte\, now 25\, essentially started over. She wrote most of her brilliant new album\, Anak Ko pronounced Ah-nuh Koh — in a burst during a self-imposed week-long solo retreat to Joshua Tree. As in the past\, Duterte recorded at home (in some songs\, you can hear the washer/dryer near her bedroom) and remained the sole producer\, engineer\, and mixer. But for the first time\, she recruited friends including Vagabon’s Laetitia Tamko\, Chastity Belt’s Annie Truscott\, Justus Proffitt\, Boy Scouts’ Taylor Vick\, as well as bandmates Zachary Elasser\, Oliver Pinnell and Dylan Allard — to contribute additional vocals\, drums\, guitars\, strings\, and pedal steel. Honing in on simplicity and groove\, refining her skills as a producer\, Duterte cracked her sound open subtly\, highlighting its best parts: She’s bloomed. \nInspired by the lush\, poppy sounds of 80s bands such as Prefab Sprout\, the Cure\, and Cocteau Twins — as well as the ecstatic guitarwork of contemporary Vancouver band Weed — Anak Ko sounds dazzlingly tactile\, and firmly present. The result is a refreshingly precise sound. On the subtly explosive “Superbike\,” Duterte aimed for the genius combination of “Cocteau Twins and Alanis Morissette” — “letting loose\,” she says\, over swirling shoegaze. “Night Time Drive” is a restless road song\, but one with a sense of contentedness and composure\, which “basically encapsulated my entire life for the past two years\,” she says — always moving\, but “accepting it\, being a little stronger from it.” (She sings\, memorably\, of “shoplifting at the Whole Foods.”) Duterte focused more on bass this time: “I just wanted to make a more groovy record\,” she notes. \nThe slow-burning highlight “Tenderness” begins minimally\, like a slightly muffled phone call\, before flowering into a bright\, jazzy earworm. Duterte calls it “a feel-good\, funky\, kind of sexy song” in part about “the curse of social media” and how it complicates relationships. “That’s definitely about scrolling on your phone and seeing a person and it just haunts you\, you can’t escape it\,” Duterte says. “I have a weird relationship to social media and how people perceive me — as this person that has a platform\, as a solo artist\, and this marginalized person. That was really getting to me. I wanted to express those emotions\, but I felt stifled. I feel like a lot of the themes of the songs stemmed from bottled up emotions\, frustration with yourself\, and acceptance.” \nThe title Anak Ko is the Filipino phrase for “my child.” It was inspired by an unassuming text message from Duterte’s mother\, who has always addressed her as such: Hi anak ko\, I love you anak ko. “It’s an endearing thing to say\, it feels comfortable\,” Duterte reflects\, likening the process of creating and releasing an album\, too\, to “birthing a child.” That sense of care charges Anak Ko\, as does another concept Duterte has found herself circling back to: the importance of patience and kindness. \n“In order to change\, you’ve got to make so many mistakes\,” Duterte says\, reflecting on her recent growth as an artist with a zen-like calm. “What’s helped me is forcing myself to be even more peaceful and kind with myself and others. You can get so caught up in attention\, and the monetary value of being a musician\, that you can forget to be humble. You can learn more from humility than the flashy stuff. I want kindness in my life. Kindness is the most important thing for this job\, and empathy.” \n

But the industry completely rejected me because when you start off young a lot of people don’t take you seriously when you’re older. I had a really popular video when I was 12 years old\, so when we’d go to meetings people would say\, ‘I remember that video!’’ That’s all they wanted to talk about\, so I realized I had to start building myself up again until I was ready to pick up the pieces and start a new life. \n“So I came back to Oklahoma. I’m so glad I did. I’ve come to appreciate how people stick up for each other and have each other’s backs. There’s also a romantic wildness in Oklahoma. I love the people here.” \nOnce Chance arrived and moved into his own apartment In Tulsa\, his perspective began to change. Freed from the pressures of the music business\, he felt a surge of self-discovery he hadn’t anticipated. “When I wrote a song \, I was able to stop thinking about what someone might think of it in a conference room in L.A.\,” he says. “I can never give up this process now. It’s always going to be with me.” \nAfter a spurt of inspired writing\, Chance flew to L.A. and headed to the studio of his friend and producer Willy Beaman. Together they polished and recorded Chance’s new songs\, some of which are featured on the upcoming EP. The single “Low” has already been released\, along with a haunting lyric video that consists of nothing but countryside shot from the window of a car driving down lonely roads. “I didn’t realize how I was feeling until I got that song down and fleshed out some of the things I was going through as I wrote it\,” he says. “It was very therapeutic.” \nOther tracks on the EP were equally illuminating. “‘’Good As Gold’ is very\, very close to me\,” Chance notes. “I’m telling myself\, ‘You’re good as gold. You can do this.’ It’s about a lot of things but mainly it symbolizes how I’ve grown and how far I’ve come.” \nAnother one\, “Hidden Love\,” addresses a more universal theme. “I’ve had relationships where I’ve had to tell my partner that the love has to stay hidden. When I was with him\, I couldn’t tell his parents or his friends that he has a boyfriend. That’s a side of me that obviously didn’t exist before I came out.” \nWhy does Chance’s latest work connect so powerfully? Partly it’s because it reflects his commitment to candor as well as his superb craftsmanship and disciplined but deeply emotional vocals. But the truth is simpler than that. \n“A lot of people think that artists write to sell product\,” he explains. “Very selfishly\, I write for one person. And that’s me.
