TONIGHT!

Thursday October 27

Austra
It’s not like the longtime vocalist and producer makes Anton LaVey references or has an austere demeanor. Quite the opposite. But on Feel it Break, Stelmanis, drummer Maya Postepski and bassist Dorian Wolf have crafted a dark, danceable masterpiece suitable for both ritual incantations and clubs; an album hearkening back to the sleazier side of New Wave but still deeply rooted in Stelmanis’s classical and operatic upbringing.

CANT
(Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor)

"To be sure, Taylor does not look silly. And CANT’s recently released debut, “Dreams Come True,” is a force to be reckoned with, albeit a dark force. Where Grizzly Bear is harmonic and folky, CANT is electronic and moody. It’s as if one is a consequence of the other." - metro.us

Moonface
(Spencer Krug from Wolf Parade/Sunset Rubdown)
Moonface is not a band. Moonface is just plain half-old Spencer Krug, in any solo or collaborative projects he's involved in from now until whenever. In early 2010 the first Moonface EP was released on Jagjaguwar. It was called Dreamland EP: Marimba and Shit-Drums, and sounds as the title suggests. This past winter, trying to keep sane in his snowed-in Montreal home, Spencer recorded another solo record. This new one is an LP called Organ Music not Vibraphone like I'd Hoped. It also sounds as the title suggests.

Dam-Funk & Master Blazter
Known as Los Angeles' "Ambassador of Boogie Funk," Dam-Funk represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Leimert Park section of L.A., Dãm (pronounced: 'Dame' as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-'80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk.

Monday October 31
Rasputina
The Rasputina group has existed for more than 20(0) years. Melora Creager founded it to meet like-minded young women (excellent cellists that wanted to play rock music and wear historical costumery).  Although often mistakenly lumped into passing fancies, Rasputina manages to survive and defy categorization by maintaining a child-like delight in music-making alongside a clear & true integrity.

Meat Puppets
Out of all of the bands that made SST Records a towering force in the American underground during the mid-'80s, the Meat Puppets lasted the longest, surviving where other bands fell apart. Not only did they play hard, loud, and fast, but they also had elements of the blues-rock of ZZ Top, the ambling folk-rock of the Grateful Dead, and Neil Young's country-rock and hard rock. As they grew older, the band matured musically, developing an accomplished instrumental technique and moving closer to the traditional hard rock that was always underneath their punk. But they never quite abandoned their punk roots, even when they briefly broke into the mainstream in the early '90s.
