When they first met in 2012, Mellen and Lyell hardly had any shared musical goals. It took two years for them to realize they wanted to break out of their previous comfort zones - folk and jazz, respectively - and form Tigers Are Bad For Horses. Tigers began when Mellen sang on one of Lyell’s film scoring projects, which gave them a chance to create several songs together. The collaboration quickly grew into a new project - one that neither Mellen nor Lyell wanted to stop any time soon.

Since that time in early 2014, the two have pushed each other towards making music beyond the scope of what either had created before. This beautiful experiment has already garnered praise: “[Recovery] is a multi-textured wonder due great acclaim; the sort that is seemingly now reserved for Sylvan Esso.” (Dots & Dashes) Their influences range from Bonobo to Bon Iver, but despite their change in musical landscape, each of Lyell and Mellen’s backgrounds continues to have a strong effect in shaping their cumulative sound. While their music lies within the electronic and indie pop genres, “the duo [has] created a sound all their own.” (DC Music Download) They released their debut single on September 9th, 2014, the same day it began airing on Sirius XM Chill, and in only two months it trafficked over 5,000 listeners. The duo is now focusing on playing shows around DC and finishing their first EP, which they plan to release December 4, 2015.
