Buke and Gase is Arone Dyer and Aron Sanchez. We are based in Hudson, NY, and are having a lovely time.
This project, from the very beginning, has been a practice in the exploration of our personal musical options and limits. This year we wanted to expand those options and raise what we perceived to be our glass ceiling in a few ways new to us. We further experimented with having our nom-de-guerre instruments control other sounds electronically, then allowed the results to dictate our tempo, rhythm and mood. Also, our approach to songwriting has traditionally been time consuming; by delegating roles we hoped to streamline as we focused on different aspects of the music independent of each other. We started with scheduled improv marathons: 8 hour sessions (with a break for lunch or ice cream) every day for one week each month, recording our new sounds and learning new software in the process. This gave us an awful lot of material to sift through, but this time only one of us was to listen through these extensive sessions and pick out the goodies. The other’s job was to puzzle together scratch ideas of potential song arrangements from those goodies.
