It's moody and forlorn\, the sound of a bloke bleating about his troubles over sadly surging synths\, but\, counter-intuitively\, it seems to be capturing people's attention. You're meant to be able to hear the words\, which fairly evidently address the confusion and despair that result from a broken relationship. "All of my love was wasted on you\," Landon Jacobs sings on Where I'm Going. On Ghost he's haunted by memories of a past love. It doesn't appear to be a metaphor for a dead affair\, but a literal song about a ghost\, although cleverly it's him who's singing from the other side ("Why did I go before you?"). Gold makes it three explorations of remorse and regret on the trot ("I don't owe you anything … I hope you find your dreams")\, and three brooding yet rousing anthems. Again\, the refrain ("Mouth is made of metal\, pocketful of yellow") has the catchiness\, and is vocally delivered with the rhythmic playfulness\, of a rap track. You can easily imagine the beat being sampled as the undercarriage for a hip-hop hit. If this was six months ago and we got stuck in a lift with one of National Anthem or Neon Gold and we wanted to sell them Sir Sly with a snappy one-line pitch\, it would be "They're Maroon 5 meets Coldplay"\, even though we accept that those two bands are diametrically opposed (not that we'd say as much – no lift journey lasts that long). Shame this never happened\, with us on commission\, because they are going to be massive. - THE GUARDIAN URL:http://rockandrollhoteldc.online/calendar/dc101-free-show-with-sir-sly/ CATEGORIES:Live ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:http://rockandrollhoteldc.online/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/SirSly_1.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE-TIME:20140118T220000 DTEND;VALUE=DATE-TIME:20140118T220000 DTSTAMP:20140108T033047 CREATED:20131204T105837 LAST-MODIFIED:20131204T105837 UID:986-1390082400-1390082400@http://rockandrollhoteldc.online SUMMARY:MASS APPEAL DESCRIPTION:For more than six years\, AutoRock has played to packed crowds at the Rock & Roll Hotel\, Howard Theater\, U Street Music Hall and other venues around DC. Chronicling the search for connection\, intimacy\, and acceptance\, the album recounts times of confusion giving way to moments of clarity. From the tender swell of lead track “Into The Thicket” to the orchestral thrust of album title track “Blue Sunshine\,” the album explores the tension between polished composition and raw energy. After relentlessly touring the U.S. over the last few years and performing at festivals such as SXSW\, Art Basel\, and the Sweetlife Festival\, the Washington\, D.C.-based band (John Thornley\, Paul Thornley\, Jacob Michael\, and Luke Adams) wanted to take a season to reflect. With the unexpected passing of John and Paul’s father and the disorientation upon returning to a city forsaken for the road\, they felt the need to start fresh. To focus on reflection and new approaches to songwriting\, the band isolated themselves with longtime friend and engineer\, Justin Long (Mirrors) for six months in a house overlooking a cemetery near Great Falls\, MD. While in this setting\, themes of home and longing gave rise to a larger picture of balancing life on the road the changes swirling around them. With these ideas brewing\, the guys brought in another good friend\, Sonny Kilfoyle (the band Minks)\, to co-produce and help guide these songs and lyrics to the surface. Soon after\, U.S. Royalty decamped for Dreamland Studios\, a former church turned recording studio in upstate New York. Most of the band’s members were first introduced to music while growing up in church\, so it seemed only fitting to have this century-old\, once-sacred space as a creative refuge. The studio’s kaleidoscopic stained glass\, cavernous sanctuary live room\, and reverb plates stretching the length of the basement provided a familiar and inspiring backdrop for the group to bring months of work to fruition. The recording process consisted of the band making use of a church organ\, mellotron\, strings and an array of analog equipment to introduce subtle layers into their already dynamic 4-piece. Sparse and elegant one moment and brash and recklessly passionate the next\, they weave a musical tapestry from such unlikely compatriots as Mazzy Star\, Stevie Nicks\, and The Verve\, with the vocal fervor of early U2. Lyrically\, the album draws from the well of saudade\, a Portuguese word that conveys a deep\, melancholic longing for someone or something\, coupled with the knowledge that the person\, place\, or experience is forever out of reach. The fascination with cinema continues the theme that U.S. Royalty developed with their debut album. Where Mirrors mimicked the swagger of Spaghetti Westerns and Kubrick films\, Blue Sunshine can be read against the narrative content of Malick's masterpiece “Days Of Heaven.” The characters in the film seem forever in flight\, either running from the law or chasing inheritance money\, but they're also pulled in by America's gorgeous open spaces and limitless opportunity\, somehow finding comfort in the swirling change around them. Like the band\, they manage to find shelter somewhere between the road and home. John's weariness is laid bare in “Blue Sunshine\,” as he asks with a howl\, "Why is the peace we had drifting away?" The fingerpicking and harmonies of "Into the Thicket" and “Get On Home” sound like echoes of the film's poignant shots of Texas wheat waving in the wind. In the record's lone instrumental\, "De Profundis\,” guitarist Paul’s sparse\, layered acoustic guitars duel each other from start to finish\, producing glimpses of beauty that are pulled back down into the churning\, muddy low-end. Luke and Jacob’s rhythm section\, which relentlessly drives in songs like "Lady in Waiting" and "Valley Of The Sun\,” stands it’s ground throughout the album giving it a solid foundation akin to the church they recorded in. Blue Sunshine sounds like it was recorded in what those in the film industry call the "magic hour\," that softly lit time just before the sun rises and right after it sets. As light filtered through the old church's stained glass\, John penned the lyrics to "Get On Home" while acoustic guitar reverberated through the cavernous space. What may be the album's most singular statement came from this unplanned moment\, as John speaks for the band: "Lost a few friends\, no fault of our own. Wasteland of the places I've come now to call my home." The Denmark trio\, who uprooted their lives and relocated to Williamsburg after signing with the label\, based everything on the notion of just saying “Fuck it.” The phrase wasn’t about apathy\, it was about doing what felt right and making the sort of music they wanted to make. It worked: New Politics yielded raucous hit single “Yeah Yeah Yeah” and the band embarked on tour for nearly two years with the likes of 30 Seconds To Mars and Neon Trees\, enrapturing fans with their intensely dynamic live shows\, bolstered by David’s impressive breakdancing skills. The band appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Fuel TV’s The Daily Habit\, and earned scores of press\, including accolades from Alternative Press and [add one more publication?]. Doing what felt right to the band evolved into a big album with a bigger response. When it came time to pen a follow-up to their formative album\, New Politics hit a few roadblocks. David and Soren had hardly paused between the momentum of New Politics and this new disc\, titled A Bad Girl In Harlem\, jumping into writing within a week of getting off tour with the Dirty Heads in the spring of 2011. But they quickly realized that there was no plan or outline for the next album\, and suddenly both musicians were single and living in Brooklyn\, a fact that illuminated just how far they were from home. Homesickness and culture shock set in\, and New Politics were forced to grapple with their present musical identity. “I don’t think any of us had really considered that we now would be doing a second album and the whole culture shock of coming over here was hitting us\,” Soren says. “The first album was a punk album and this one had to be taken to a whole new level\, but we didn’t actually know what that level was.” The process of writing A Bad Girl In Harlem proved long and arduous\, but ultimately fruitful. The band came out of it with over 60 demos\, many inspired by David’s new single life. The musicians embraced a greater variety of musical styles\, drawing influence equally from punk rock and pop music. The recording process coincided with the songwriting\, and in fact a few of the disc’s final tracks feature the original demo vocals\, which resonate with a more genuine flair than the subsequent takes. The songs’ lyrics\, too\, were rooted in the musicians’ shifting lives and experiences. “Harlem\,” the album’s first single\, was inspired a fling David had with a girl from Spanish Harlem\, an area he never thought he’d visit. The throbbing rock number captures a boisterous party vibe and marked a turning point in the band’s writing process for A Bad Girl In Harlem. “It came at a point when we were all like ‘What the fuck is going on?’” Soren notes. “And the song came from us having fun. We were still a little afraid of changing but we just said ‘Fuck it.’ We realized we had nothing to lose and could do whatever we wanted.” So it turned out New Politics’ old motto could be their new motto\, even as the band shifted and evolved. The rest of the album\, culled from the pile of demos\, is notably varied\, and follows in this raucous sensibility\, even on standout “Stuck On You\,” an emotional piano ballad that reveals the group’s introspective side. The punk aesthetic from New Politics lingers\, but regardless of musical style Soren and David were mostly interested in capturing sincere moments in equally genuine music. “Everything has to come from the heart\,” David says. “Realizing onstage that you can do anything and if it’s honest and from the heart\, the rest will follow. Everything will follow. It’s been really cool realizing that and bringing it into the album.” “I feel that we have never been this focused\,” Soren adds. “It’s more than us being these crazy\, jumping around musicians and just going with whatever flows. We have more of a mission. We went through something hard and now we’re stronger than ever. I think that’s the most important thing – it’s actually been a great experience to fall down and rise again.” URL:http://rockandrollhoteldc.online/calendar/new-politics/ CATEGORIES:Live ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:http://rockandrollhoteldc.online/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/11.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE-TIME:20140131T210000 DTEND;VALUE=DATE-TIME:20140131T210000 DTSTAMP:20140108T033047 CREATED:20140107T143333 LAST-MODIFIED:20140107T143333 UID:1090-1391202000-1391202000@http://rockandrollhoteldc.online SUMMARY:The Ripples DESCRIPTION:TICKETS ON-SALE FRIDAY 1/10 @ 10AM Incorporating a rock sound\, poetic lyrics\, and complex song structures\, the music made by The Ripples is both head-nod-inducing and thought-provoking. The process of completing Trouble was\, for the band\, one of learning to accept silence\, to let that empty space exist no matter what it might awaken or evoke. You could catch glimpses of these dark and unexplored places in the margins of Hospitality’s 2012 self-titled debut\, but they are at the very heart of Trouble. If you listen closely\, you can hear a band pushing against their own boundaries and limitations until they find the very air around them subtly but perceptibly changed. The trio of Amber Papini (guitar\, vocals)\, Brian Betancourt (bass)\, and Nathan Michel (drums) approach Trouble with the force and unity of a well-rehearsed touring rock band. They supplement their performances with strategically placed strings\, synthesizers\, and drum machines. But silence is an inescapable force on Trouble\, an invisible fourth player that draws you into the unexplored corners of familiar sounds: the full\, ghostly decay of a reverb tail\, the round pluck of a bass string\, the exact syllables where a doubled vocal line diverges. In its lyrics and its musical construction\, Trouble is an album that wonders about the mysteries that lurk just beyond our field of vision. Slyly and sympathetically\, Papini ponders a Saturday afternoon fishing trip as a wrenching interplay of life and death\, the perfect blue sky at an air show as a setting for a soured romance. Papini elaborates: “Most of the songs are about everyday environments that arouse anxiety or unease. The ocean isn’t meant for people; we aren’t supposed to be there\, and some of the animals that live there are much bigger and faster than we are in the water. I think a lot of the songs deal with this ‘out of place’ kind of theme\, feelings of unease and the questions of what is under you or what surrounds you.” Trouble creates a space where conflicting sentiments and experiences are given room to coexist\, where small and seemingly mundane observations pose big questions that hang in the air\, unanswered and unanswerable. With a title referencing the artist’s endless struggle in the battle between creativity and outside forces\, Trouble also explores the universal themes of loss\, love\, and loneliness with Papini’s trademark wit. Lines like “And if I’m lost and low / And need you / I’ll disconnect the line” from “Inauguration” somehow make the ultimate kiss-off seem charming\, while nature makes clear the loneliness felt when leaving someone you love behind in these lines from “I Miss Your Bones”: “And all the stars will / Twinkle in the midst of a sea / Of black and lonely /An everlasting loss lack abyss.” It’s fitting that the album was hashed out in band practices that blurred the boundaries between work and leisure\, darkness and light\, creative collaboration and friendship. Foregoing the usual nighttime hours kept by musicians\, the band chose to work on these songs during daily morning rehearsals that proved in many ways more demanding than characteristically relaxed nighttime gatherings. Through these sessions\, the band sought to take their music as far as they possibly could as a three-piece\, to make sure that every small gesture fell into place and played a vital role in constructing the shape and feel of the songs. The band carried this daylight-infused clearheadedness with them into the studio with chief arranger Nathan Michel and engineer Matt Boynton acting as co-producers. Nathan describes the process: “We really wanted to avoid the ornamental\, but I always like to add more sounds. Matt was helpful in keeping the arrangements as simple and direct as possible. We all wanted the record to have a warm and open sound.” When put to tape\, some of the songs for Trouble worked better than expected as fierce and focused trio performances\, while others called for more substantial reimaginings. “I Miss Your Bones” emerged almost entirely from a live performance\, while “Inauguration” found the band ripping apart their live arrangement and reconstructing the song with drum machines and synthesizers. The album unfolds like a walk on the beach or a journey to a place you didn’t know you were going. Perhaps a darker sound overall\, but Trouble begins with the trademark Hospitality pop then unfurls to reward the listener with the more expansive stripped-down instrumentation of side B. And here\, again\, is that distinctively present silence\, creating a space where an undulating synthesizer feels as alive and mysterious as a single voice in a room. And the emotions brimming on the album are bliss and contentment. On the title track\, with a molasses flow\, Maria names her blessings from the diurnal to the divine. Here she sings: “I got you/I got me/I heard the sweetest voice call me mommy/got my old 5 string/I’ve got everything.” The music is balmy with a sweetly swaying groove\, angelic backup vocals\, gospel organs\, and a shooting star guitar melody. The stunning “Tunnel Vision” is expansive and chiming pop with a lose-yourself-on-the-dance-floor beat. Something About Knowing’s spirit of “coming home with confidence” extends from Maria’s personal and artistic peacefulness to the team she picked to surround herself with while making this album. She enlisted producer Mike Mogis\, an essential creative foil on her first two records. Her brother Macey Taylor played bass on every song as well as keyboards and piano. And her old high school music pal Brad Armstrong co-wrote\, played on\, and recorded two tracks in his garage. “There we were back in his garage\, only now we both had kids running around\, it was really special\,” Maria says. Longtime friend and collaborator Andy LeMaster mixed these two songs. Additionally\, Maria recorded the track “This Is It” with Lester Nuby\, and Daniel Farris—two trusted companions she worked with on her last two records—at home in Birmingham\, Alabama. Maria Taylor has released four solo albums and an EP\, and has been lauded for her collaborations with artists such as Bright Eyes\, Michael Stipe (R.E.M.)\, Moby\, David Barbe (Sugar\, Drive-By Truckers\, Son Volt)\, and Crooked Fingers. Their music has been described as "swooning\, harmony-laden stuff…laced with arcing fiddle\, shimmering keys and healthy doses of ringing guitar punch." His self-titled debut album is strongly influenced by his unique background in classical music\, which includes a job assisting composer/arranger Nico Muhly. After finishing his musical studies at Yale\, Ludwig-Leone wrote the album in six weeks while holed up in a studio on the mountainous border between Alberta and British Columbia. He focused on life’s top-shelf issues – youth\, nostalgia\, anxiety\, unrequited love – and tied these vast themes to different characters through vocal contributions from longtime friend Allen Tate\, as well as Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius. The first track released from the album\, “Sonsick\,” tackles many of these larger themes head-on. ”It’s like a panic attack disguised as a birthday party\,” Ludwig-Leone says. ”I realized that the most intense moments are the ones in which conflicting emotional worlds exist inside you\, equally\, at once.” San Fermin is not an album of singles but rather a sweeping\, full-bodied listen with multiple distinct peaks and ambitious thematic connections. Ludwig-Leone composed all of the album’s arrangements and lyrics in full prior to collaborating and recording\, noting that “writing for a large group of unknown musicians infused the writing process with a kind of operatic scope. Since then\, the band has coalesced into a core of eight members in addition to Ludwig-Leone: Allen Tate and Rae Cassidy\, lead vocals; Eliza Bagg and Rebekah Durham\, vocals/violin; John Brandon\, trumpet; Stephen Chen\, saxophone; Tyler McDiarmid\, guitar; and Mike Hanf\, drums. They toured with the likes of Teenage Fanclub\, the Dum Dum Girls\, and Modest Mouse\, had the drone guitar-drenched single "Rubber" remixed by Mogwai\, and were part of the BBC's Sound of 2011 list\, all before the appearance of their self-titled debut album\, which was released in February 2011 through Fat Possum\, which had signed the band in September 2010. In April 2013\, Yuck announced that they would be recording a second album in New York with producer Chris Coady\, but would be without Daniel Blumberg\, who left the band to focus on his solo material. The artist does not tinker with the universe\, he recreates it out of his own experience and understanding of life.” -Henry Miller Blur The Line feels like an eponymous debut. This record is not a departure\, nor is it simply growth. It is a realization purely of where Those Darlins are as artists right now. With Blur The Line\, Those Darlins take away the labels and constructs that people use to define\, categorize and ultimately destroy. They don’t want to hide or create some manufactured mystery. They show it\, reveal it. That revelation is more powerful than anything else. Those Darlins entered the public eye in 2008. They took on matching surnames and announced themselves a gang of resilient outsiders\, each a misfit of southern upbringing\, with its problems and charms. Their self-titled debut carved out an ethos and a spot on the map. Their warning: they weren’t just anybody’s darlings; if you didn’t want them in all their wild glory\, you didn’t need to hang. They followed that rural-tinged debut with Screws Get Loose – a spiky garage/art rock album that launched them onto the international scene. However\, growth can be painful. In those travels and the travels that followed\, the collective persona they had cultivated began to strangle their individuality. Jessi\, Nikki\, and Linwood set out to uncover the true complex\, contradictory nature of themselves as individuals and as a band. Over a year in the making\, Blur The Line is the product of this search. It was written and recorded during their first extended time off the road since formation – this time with a lineup evenly divided between the sexes after the addition of Adrian Barrera (Gentlemen Jesse & His Men\, Barreracudas). The result is a record to file on your shelf between Patti Smith’s Easter and Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk. Blur The Line is a first-rate album of powerful tracks that mingle heavy rhythms and distorted Neil Young guitars with ear-candy harmonies and a slew of captivating lyrics. The band called on Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo\, John Cale\, Jeff the Brotherhood) to produce Blur The Line\, and it turned out to be a revelation – a chance to stretch and give shape to their work with his supportive\, laid back demeanor and experienced hands at the helm. Blur The Line is a look inward\, asking bigger questions and tackling an archetypal theme – the opposing forces that lurk in us and in our world. “This may be the most important theme on this record\,” says Nikki\, “Balance and finding balance within ourselves and others.” This isn‘t mopey existentialism; it’s a salute to what’s always been at odds in our world\, and the beauty that comes from that friction. Asking big questions leads to great art. The record is an exploration of dualities: masculinity/femininity\, nature/civilization. Blur The Line is nothing if not forthcoming\, laced with sardonic humor and overt sexuality\, coupled with sincere vulnerability and often brutal honesty. “I don’t think a three piece female band could have made this album\,” notes Jessi. “Nor could an all male band.” On BTL\, it’s Those Darlins’ ability to balance and love both the masculine and feminine powers (as all great rock does) that gives them potency\, and in that crucible\, great music is made – without the reductive and often exclusionary world of “women’s” rock. Feminist critics deride oevres by bands like Led Zeppelin as oppressive and one dimensional while ignoring their long womanly hair\, flowing shirts and moaning falsettos that sing\, in truth\, of women’s actual power\, albeit to the sound of phallic guitar thunder. On the other hand\, Patti Smith makes no apologies about her love of men and male-created art. She understands the power of both male and female etc\, and chooses simply to be an artist. Balance. The sparks of the band’s self-scrutiny may have been lit during the band’s European tour last summer. A German radio interviewer asked of the band\, “Are you optimists?” After some blank stares\, Linwood moved the conversation along. But Jessi couldn’t shake the question – or her inability to answer it. “I was hung up on the realization that the answer was no. I remembered a time when I was an optimist\, but somewhere along the road that had changed. I wanted to get back to an optimistic point of view.” Her eventual reply became the lead lyric in one of Blur The Line’s most potent numbers\, “Optimist”—“Used to be an optimist / It got too dangerous.” Listening to the album’s bookend tracks\, we hear the band’s musical and thematic approaches at work. Their modern take on the underpinnings of rock and roll is revealed\, bubbling up from the gritty traditions of both white rural folk and African American blues. Starting with the graphic\, moving narrative of “Oh God\,” a modern fable that chronicles a shadowy exchange with an unsettling host of visuals\, and ending with “Ain’t Afraid\,” a vivid and blustering 12-bar declaration\, the album’s narrative comes full circle. “I don’t know what lays in store / but I ain’t afraid anymore\,” sings Jessi. Facing fear leads to empowerment. The coming months will have Those Darlins back on the road\, doing what they’re known for: delivering some of the most dynamic and indelible live shows today. Come ready. As Jessi shouts on the anthem “Western Sky\,” “I don’t wanna hear another civilized roar / Let’s make our own noise.” URL:http://rockandrollhoteldc.online/calendar/those-darlins/ CATEGORIES:Live ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:http://rockandrollhoteldc.online/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Those-Darlins.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE-TIME:20140215T220000 DTEND;VALUE=DATE-TIME:20140215T220000 DTSTAMP:20140108T033047 CREATED:20131204T105837 LAST-MODIFIED:20131204T105837 UID:986-1392501600-1392501600@http://rockandrollhoteldc.online SUMMARY:MASS APPEAL DESCRIPTION:For more than six years\, AutoRock has played to packed crowds at the Rock & Roll Hotel\, Howard Theater\, U Street Music Hall and other venues around DC. Although they deftly fused a love of doo wop and classic\, Spector-produced pop with a nod to some of the more intense and inventive guitar acts of the '80s\, perhaps the band's defining attribute was in James Allan's earnest lyricism. Former Creation boss Alan McGee and ex-Libertines guitarist Carl Barat were so struck by a 2006 hometown performance by the band that each went on to ensure that more people witnessed their powerful live sets. Their third single\, "Daddy's Gone"\, was ranked as the second best track of 2007 by NME and even led to the band striking up a friendship with Lisa Marie Presley after the song came to her attention. Next\, their platinum-selling debut album\, Glasvegas\, received widespread praise following its release on Columbia in September 2008\, reaching no. 2 in the UK charts and also being nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize in 2009. Less than three months after the release of their debut\, the Transylvania-recorded\, Christmas-themed EP A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like a Kiss) was issued\, bringing further critical acclaim. The band's sophomore full-length\, Euphoric /// Heartbreak \\\\, was written\, demoed\, and tracked at a beach house in Santa Monica\, California during 2010 before undergoing final production under the direction of Flood in London. Before any recording had taken place\, it was announced that original drummer Caroline McKay had left the band. Her replacement\, swedish music student Jonna Lofgren\, joined Glasvegas after recording for the album had been completed. On its release in April 2011\, Euphoric /// Heartbreak \\\ reached No. 10 on the U.K. album chart and also hit the No. 1 spot in Sweden. To promote the album\, the band embarked on a second world tour\, which incorporated their biggest European headline gigs to date as well as successful trips to both Australia and Japan. Lauded for their unique sound and powerful lyrical content Glasvegas have a fervent and loyal fan base around the globe and to date the band have toured the world twice including a trip to China and they have toured North America several times. 2014 heralds the return of Glasvegas to North America with their critically acclaimed self-produced third studio album\, "Later...When the TV Turns to Static"\, released through BMG. The album was recorded in the band's home town of Glasgow at Gorbals Sound and produced by lead singer and songwriter James Allan. Featuring the singles "I'd Rather Be Dead (Than Be With You)"\, "If"\, and the title track "Later...When the TV Turns to Static". The album is a staggeringly emotive 45 minute sojourn through broken relationships and "the mad energy" of the world\, a scorching soundscape marking a new chapter for one of the UK's most fervently supported bands\, reclaiming their independence and returning to their roots to deliver a record that chimes with the heartfelt social realism they have made their own. Glasvegas have come home\, turned their eyes from the scorching light back into the shadows\, where reality lies. Frontman Ari Picker looked to move beyond the themes of loss that fueled two emotional\, densely personal collections of songs. Channeling the liberating happiness he felt in his young marriage into his method\, he came up with a new approach to writing: "I wanted to reach out and grab the music rather than have it come from some internal place." On past releases Picker had used an expanded six-member band to render his carefully composed\, classical-inflected songs\, bringing them fully arranged to the studio for the band to perform. For the new album\, the band was pared to a lean electronic-rock four-piece\, and in this new configuration Lost In The Trees took to the road to workshop the songs that would become Past Life. Immediately\, the new tracks evidence more than a band pared down; the arrangements are modern\, spare\, minimal\, emphasizing groove and rhythm\, blending the sonic architecture of 21st century electronic dance music\, the austere emotion of the minimalist composers\, and the sensual swerve of post-Bowie 80s pop. Having crafted the songs to create a maximum impact in a live setting\, the band made their next break with past practice\, electing to work with an outside producer for the first time. Nicolas Vernhes\, whose credits include breakthrough albums from Deerhunter\, Dirty Projectors\, Animal Collective\, and Wild Nothing\, endorsed the band's new minimal aesthetic\, and the question in the studio became\, "How much can we strip away" With an approach that forefronts beats and basslines\, Vernhes and the band lift away the orchestral density of the previous albums – the emotional analog of Picker's intense lyrics – leaving a more direct framework of soul-inflected guitar lines\, throbbing groove\, and Picker's soaring vocal hooks. Fans that came to the band lured by the lush classicism of All Alone In An Empty House and A Church That Fits Our Needs (the Wall Street Journal's album of the year in 2012) will not be disappointed. After all\, the band are known for their unique orchestral sound\, and Church\, with its intense narrative of loss\, drew lavish praise from all quarters\, both as an "exquisite exercise in the seduction of melancholy" (Iowa Press-Citizen) and "a stirring blend of modest rusticity and urbane ambition" (New York Times). The haunting lyricism of Picker's voice and melodies has not diminished in the new sparer approach\, but instead rises to the fore\, bringing out that timeless quality of the melodies that is the common ground of both folk and pop music. This pop quality\, buried but always present in previous efforts\, shines on Past Life; not pop in any trivial\, retro sense\, but the yearning lilt of Harry Nilsson or Mark Hollis\, that floating melodicism that Relix found so "achingly beautiful." Picker\, for one\, is pleased to be moving on from the highly personal lyrics of the previous albums to more universal themes. He singles out "Glass Harp" from the new album\, describing it as "a half awake song to my wife\," adding that it may be "as much of a love song as I can write." On "Daunting Friend" Picker promises his companion "we'll float around the town\," a cinematic image that recalls the romantic mysticism of Wings of Desire more than it does any past Lost In The Trees lyric. This new openness in Picker's imagist lyrics – loose\, joyful\, embracing – tends on Past Life toward meditations on what Picker describes as "recognizing impermanence\," all rendered by Lost In The Trees' greatest instrument (perhaps overshadowed in the past by the violins and harps): Picker's profound tenor voice. The voice the New York Times called the "essential embodiment of vulnerability" becomes on Past Life the load-bearing wall – it's a burden this extraordinary instrument\, and Picker\, are more than ready to take on. Vacillating from somber-yet-soaring melodies on one track to pummeling metal heft on the next\, Memorial sounds like an album with split personalities. Where one song showcases guitarist Mike Sullivan\, drummer Dave Turncrantz and bassist/keyboardist Brian Cook's mastery of lush melancholic melody\, the next exhibits their most abrasive underground metal leaning sound\, with washed-out 16th-note riffs and crushing rhythms. The band's penchant for endless hooks remains a constant\, but Memorial embodies their most dramatic ranges in tone. "We've always tried to balance our metal-influenced sounds with more nuanced\, pretty\, orchestral elements\," Cook says. "But this time\, it's far more polarized in that the heavy parts are much more blown out and exaggerated while the pretty moments are far more restrained\, delicate\, and atmospheric." In the two years since Russian Circles released their landmark fourth album Empros\, the Chicago trio toured worldwide nearly incessantly\, encountering many heavy acts whose music seemed needlessly complicated. "We set out to make a straightforward\, intense\, heavy record\," Cook explains. "We subconsciously gravitated toward darker and more somber sounds. We wanted to get away from the overtly flashy." In search of such a streamlined sound\, the trio focused on each individual song having its own emotional and musical characteristics. As such\, Memorial almost feels like stages of grief. That notion might be aided by 1) the album's clever structuring\, in which it ends in the same place as it starts\, and 2) special guest vocalist Chelsea Wolfe lending her hauntingly somber vocals to the album closing title track. To a degree\, the monolithic\, juxtaposed moods on Memorial is the band's reaction to the proliferation of iPod culture affecting how bands write music. Today\, most musicians are trying to mash together disparate elements with results sounding as unpalatable as cooking a meal blindfolded. Russian Circles wisely and deftly sidestep the trappings of genre amalgamation. "I want to hear a band with a broad palette\," Cook says. "But it should find that weird balance with breadth and width. We wanted to make a record with more extreme peaks and valleys. I'm hoping that we can get away with making a schizophrenic record." Those extremes are no more perfectly exemplified than on album opener "Memoriam"\, which leads in with delicately plucked guitar notes and synth haze hovering in the background\, vaguely reminiscent of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here album. But the mood abruptly ruptures as the next song\, "Deficit" forcefully kicks in with a wall of vicious\, treble-bleached guitars blaring over Turncrantz's half-time rhythm pummeling his drums with the sound of an industrial machine re-fabricating raw materials. Tension builds to a breaking point about halfway through\, opening into a skull-thwacking chugging riff that becomes the foundation for multiple mutant variations slithering over the top. "1777" is possibly Russian Circles' most epic and perfectly streamlined song of all time\, incorporating both the physical dynamics of the studio in its sound -- much like David Bowie's emotive vocals on "Heroes"\, but instead with drum beats and guitars jutting outward in dramatic fashion -- while also developing a slow-burn build of elements purely focused on the emotional specificity of the song. Elsewhere\, the uplifting melody of "Ethel" features a chiming finger-tapping guitar line that's heavily treated with effects making it sound like a vintage synth laid over powerfully expressive drums and distorted bass notes cascading over the proceedings with the forceful cadence of a lead vocalist. Album closing title track\, "Memorial" is a plaintive\, somber ballad featuring Wolfe's guest vocals. A hazy version of the album opening guitar notes hang in the distance as Wolfe's reverb-soaked voice hovers above the dreamlike melody somewhat reminiscent of Julee Cruise's Twin Peaks theme song. Memorial was recorded at the illustrious Electrical Audio studio in Chicago with the band's longtime producer Brandon Curtis of The Secret Machines & Interpol who also helmed the band's two previous albums\, Empros and Geneva. Memorial will be available on LP\, CD and download via Sargent House on October 29th\, 2013. If that were the only unusual thing about the making of 'Lo-Fantasy\,' his fifth studio album\, it would still be remarkably strange\, but this is no ordinary Sam Roberts Band record. One year earlier: New songs were taking shape in the dim glow of Sam's Montreal basement studio. "It might have taken less time if my kids had respected my privacy a little more\," says Roberts. "Once I put a lock on the door\, things started to move faster." The songs were calling on a broad spectrum of influences\, from the Clash to Fela Kuti\, from electronic-gurus Underworld to Etienne De Crecy\, from Gordon Lightfoot to Ray Davies. What the music needed was a producer and a visionary who could help sculpt these different directions into a focused\, living whole. The band took a shot in the dark and sent rough demos across the pond… Who they got was Youth. Youth (a.k.a. Martin Glover) boasted an incredible resume\, with production credits ranging from The Verve's 'Urban Hymns' to Crowded House\, as well as stints performing with Paul McCartney\, ambient-techno kings The Orb\, and post-punk outfit Killing Joke. "His musical background hit every note\, all the colours we were trying to put on the record\," says Roberts. They met in Montreal for a freezing February week of pre-production\, Youth swearing it had to be "Hell on Earth!" He pored over Roberts' new tracks with an irreverent and unrelenting eye. "He'd say\, 'Where's the chorus\, man?’" Roberts laughs in his best British accent. "'That's not a chorus. THIS is the chorus.' He was unapologetically ripping the songs to pieces\, putting songwriter and band to the test. I had to defend my music\, know when to dig in my heels\, know when to try a different approach. You have to be elastic enough that you're open to the new possibilities\, and our bond grew stronger through that." At the end of the week\, Youth returned to England\, leaving Roberts and his band—guitarist Dave Nugent\, bassist James Hall\, keyboardist Eric Fares\, and drummer Josh Trager—to make sense of it all. Songs were shuffled\, jettisoned\, and reassembled\, verses became choruses and choruses became verses. While Sam and the band might normally spend twelve months recording an album\, Youth returned to Montreal in May and informed them that they'd be recording 'Lo-Fantasy' live-off the studio floor in twelve days. "The weather\," he said\, "was much better…" "We worked insanely long hours - after three days of that you're almost in a hallucinogenic state\, like an ayahuasca journey - or so I've heard\," Roberts laughs. "Youth would be in the control room with his Hawaiian shirt unbuttoned\, dancing and doing oil painting interpretations of the songs while we were recording\, and we're thinking\, 'My God we've got a madman at the helm!'" The combination of sleep deprivation\, excitement\, uncertainty\, and adrenaline pushed the band outside any notion of comfort\, generating their most dynamic and inventive arrangements to date. It also helped capture the fiery spirit and urgency that have made their live shows so legendary\, earning them spots performing everywhere from Letterman and Conan to Bonnaroo\, ACL\, Lollapalooza and Bumbershoot\, and alongside heroes like the Rolling Stones and AC/DC. "Youth would be very encouraging and constructive\, and then sometimes he'd be ruthless\," Sam explains. "You'd be sweating over a guitar part or a vocal take and you'd hear Youth say\, 'Lame!' in the headphones. Devastatingly direct… It became this real psychological trip. He's there to create an atmosphere in which a record is going to be made\, to shake you right out of your boots as a musician and hold your feet to the fire. And after a while you adapt to being in that frame of mind where you have to think on your feet and be ready to try everything completely differently. If you got Youth up on his feet dancing\, you knew you were on the right track." It's only fitting\, then\, that 'Lo-Fantasy' opens with the slithery groove of "Shapeshifters\," an ode to fluid identity and flexible self-image. "That song is a gateway to a lot of what happens on the rest of the record\," Roberts says. "It was one of the first I wrote for the album\, an all-out dance track\, and I felt that with a song like this under my belt\, I wasn't going to be pigeonholed into making any one specific kind of record." From the anthemic call for solidarity of "We're All In This Together" to the electro-thump of "Chasing The Light\," 'Lo-Fantasy' is indeed the most wide-ranging collection Roberts has ever written\, infusing his particularly rousing brand of rock and roll with elements of funk\, house\, electronic\, and African music. Throughout it all\, his lyrics grapple with greater questions of identity and self-discovery in the modern age. "That's the test of a rock and roll song or a pop song to me\," Roberts says. "It's to confront those issues in three or four minutes\, to get to a place where the music itself helps bring you towards some enlightenment\, or at least some resolution to those big questions." Once tracking was completed\, Roberts and Nugent headed to Spain for the final touches at El Mirador Studio\, a beautiful mountaintop retreat Youth had constructed overlooking olive orchards and modeled after sketches of hobbits' homes in Middle Earth from the 'Lord Of The Rings.' It was there\, in his own personal hobbit hole\, that Roberts completed work on the album's final songs\, a fittingly strange end to a particularly surreal and mystical recording process. A remix studio was set up just outside the control room\, where Youth and Eddie Banda would take the newly-minted tracks and twist them into electronic incarnations ready for the dance-floors of the world. "We were going through a heavy 'Tears for Fears' phase on our last tour\," Roberts explains\, so for the final phase of the record\, mixing duties were given to Dave Bascombe\, renowned UK mixer and engineer on 'Songs From The Big Chair.' "Low fantasy is a literary genre that takes place in a world very much like our own\, but in which magic - or the possibility of magic - exists\," Roberts says. "It's grounded in reality\, but it's an altered reality. You can still ride a train to Alberta\, but there's a place for the supernatural in this otherwise rational world - it's out there and we haven't tapped into it yet." Maybe music is the bridge…. However\, If you only take a surface look at the heavily tattooed turntablist\, you're only getting half of the story. Martin is adept at spinning all styles of music. Never content to draw on the same methods twice\, nor to recline under the heel of expectation\, The Men quit the city in early 2012 to head for Big Indian\, NY – transforming a remote Catskills locale into a full-fledged stray dog studio home. Taking complete advantage of dry eyes and clear mountain mornings\, the band has never before so thoroughly surrendered their writing process\, or themselves for that matter\, to the recording environment. Entering with only the most skeletal sketches\, the house was selected as an incubator for its technical limitations\, 32-hour orbit and predisposal to celestial intervention. Familiar faces remain\, the core of guitarists Nick Chiericozzi and Mark Perro\, with drummer Rich Samis all returning from 2012’s much-acclaimed Open Your Heart. In addition\, friend and producer Ben Greenberg (Pygmy Shrews\, Hubble\, Zs) officially joins the ranks as bassist on paper\, and full-bore compositional partner in practice. Wayward brother Kevin Faulkner occupies his most substantial sphere to date\, dreaming aloud on lap steel as before along with whatever else was demanded of him. The Men’s oft-cited commitment to their “no-one-is-frontman” maxim surely insists itself all the more emphatically here… so much so that it practically creates a new band in the process. This unique situation induces a fresh fluidity amongst their roles and instrumentation\, allowing for an expansion of palette and a contraction of focus. Piano\, mandolin\, harmonica\, four-part vocal harmonies and even no-input harsh noise all weave their way through New Moon. Spiritually\, it is hedged with as much leaden dirge and ecstatic abandon\, as it is genuine saccharine steel-string levity\, and an ever-tightening\, no apologies pop concision. Summarily: New Moon is the remembrance of why green grass has to lean on the dirt beneath; it is a love letter devoted in bowed humility to the grand continuum\, exposing the hoax of the great divide. Allegiances to the glowing patinas of Detroit and San Francisco\, New York and Nashville all abound\, but ‘nostalgia’ is not her name. The essence of New Moon is to revisit — never retread. Vibrational bonds are the silver that comes to line the long road home. And with regard to Xiu Xiu\, its applications are infinite: always relevant\, always provocative\, always surprising\, always evolving\, always glittering. It’s fitting\, then\, that as Jamie Stewart’s ever-evolving band marks a decade in existence\, such a powerful sentiment would serve as the title of its latest album. At its core\, Always symbolizes the mutual camaraderie with and deep dedication to each person who has internalized Xiu Xiu’s work\, tattooed its name on their skin or soul\, and throughout the past ten years made the band a part of their lives. The origin of these intense\, everlasting bonds is Stewart. His fearless lyrics have given voice to life’s most untouchable and taboo subjects\, while his distinctively committed but hushed vocals crystallize and medicate their unsettling impact. Those familiar with the band’s work will take particular note of the times Stewart re-visits profoundly personal accounts from his own life—most prominently on “Beauty Towne” (a not-so-uplifting postscript to the muddle of those depicted in “Clowne Towne” from 2004’s Fabulous Muscles) and “Black Drum Machine” (which finishes the narrative of incest and molestation begun on “Black Keyboard” from 2008’s Women as Lovers). Elsewhere\, Stewart’s willingness to broach any subject finds him confronting both the topical and the intimate in equally meaningful ways: “Gul Mudin” seeks to bring comfort to an Afghani teenage boy murdered for sport by American soldiers; “Joey’s Song” strives to do the same for Stewart’s brother in the aftermath of a family tragedy. “Factory Girls” chronicles the sexual objectification and desperate existence of Chinese female\, migrant workers. “I Luv Abortion\,” featuring perhaps Stewart’s most unhinged vocal ever\, careens through the resolute heartache of a friend too young to be pregnant and seeks to personalize this most political issue. But while such writing is worthy of reverence\, Always’ most arresting moments lie in its sonic innovation—transforming avant pop elements from an undertone into a bright black focal point while adding new influences such as choral music\, kraut rock and animal field recordings. Produced by Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier (who also contributes drums and vocals to the album) and mixed by John Congleton (Antony and the Johnsons\, Marylin Manson\, the Roots) the album is positively vibrant. During recording\, Stewart saw a Bible verse spray painted on the wall of his gym. He interpreted the verse to mean\, “Horror and beauty are the same; love and hate are the same\, the tireless dread of our own lives and of living can be embraced with the same fervency as what we find beautiful.” Composed of this essence\, the album proves that perhaps the only six letters to carry the same weight as “always” are these: Xiu Xiu. Somehow it slipped under the door. It was meant to be a small thing\, maybe a home-recorded EP\, to release between Animal Joy and the next full-length (for which we're in the studio right now). But it took on a life of its own. Re-imagining and renovating songs by the bands we've toured with was like leafing through a scrapbook\, and brought back the highs and lows of a decade of touring\, from dives in Oklahoma and squats in Slovenia to the Fillmore West\, the Bataclan\, and the MGM Grand (ask me about that one sometime). Audiences never see most of touring life\, and it's the hidden moments that came to mind while we were recording. I thought of Chris Martin\, pacing nervously in the bowels of the LA Forum\, before the first show of a tour for an album on which EMI had staked its existence; of Brian Campbell\, Clinic's indomitable bassist\, muttering "I hate these f_____ things" before donning a grimy surgical mask for the thousandth time; of David Thomas Broughton wandering into an audience in Brussels mid-song\, knocking things over and falling down\, then slipping us a half-smile offstage; of Xiu Xiu hiding stuffed animals and candy in the stacks of a university library for their devoted fans to find; of Sharon Van Etten playing us the rough demos for the album that would put her on the map while she drove our van through the snowy Idaho mountains. Touring is an expression of faith – in yourself\, in your friends\, in the hope that the world has a place for you. In that spirit\, I invited all the bands we covered to play on Fellow Travelers\, with the caveat that you couldn't play on your own song. Almost everyone rose to the bait: Chris from the Baptist Generals turned Clinic's "Tomorrow" into a bewildered\, stomping incantation\, while Clinic\, in turn\, infected the Generals' "Fucked Up Life" with drum machines\, radio signals\, and their trademark combo organ. I added recordings I made of birds and waves in the Falklands to David Thomas Broughton's "Ambiguity\," and he sent us a tape he made of sparrows\, bulbuls\, and the clanking shovels of highway workers in Pyongyang\, North Korea (long story)\, which we spliced into our rock-anthem version of Xiu Xiu's "I Luv the Valley OH!!" And Jenn from Wye Oak\, who\, like us\, had also toured with Lou B\, added vocals to "Natural One\," our most straight-up reading of the bunch\, since I couldn't think of a better way to honor a perfectly-constructed song. Leon Trotsky\, who gave the words "fellow travelers" their political aura\, once wrote that "a protest against reality\, either conscious or unconscious\, active or passive\, optimistic or pessimistic\, always forms part of a really creative piece of work." Maybe that's why these songs seem like they belong together\, to me. Listening back\, I get a feeling of common effort\, of common purpose\, among all of our different musical paths; we've all tried to defy or transform reality in small ways with our music\, and to prove it with our performing lives. Playing these songs felt like riding a wave. And St. Paul & The Broken Bones deliver on those promises. Half The City is the compelling full-length Single Lock/Thirty Tigers debut of the Birmingham\, Alabama-based sextet\, who have already created a maelstrom of interest with their roof-raising live shows and self-released four-song 2012 EP. Produced by Ben Tanner of Alabama Shakes\, and recorded and mixed in the storied R&B mecca of Muscle Shoals\, Alabama\, the album harkens back to the region’s classic soul roots while extending the form with electrifying potency. Front man Paul Janeway’s handle “St. Paul” is a wry allusion to the vocalist’s grounding in the church. Like many a legendary soul singer\, Janeway\, a native of the small town of Chelsea\, Alabama\, was raised on the gospel side\, in a non-denominational\, Pentecostal-leaning local church. Virtually no non-religious music could be heard in his devout household. Janeway says\, “The only secular music that I heard at all was a ‘70s group called the Stylistics\, and Sam Cooke. That was about it. The rest of it was all gospel music. When I was about 10 years old\, I was groomed to be a minister. My goal in life until I was about 18 years old was to be a preacher.” He adds\, “My pastor was the reason that I learned to play guitar. They would let me play guitar and sing in church. What was weird was that he would never let me sing lead – I’d sing background vocals. I always thought\, ‘Well\, maybe I’m just a good background vocalist.’ So I never thought I could really\, really sing\, at all. I never thought it would be a living\, ever.” Though his time in the church exposed Janeway to key influences in gospel music – the Mighty Clouds of Joy\, Alex Bradford\, Clay Evans – he began moving away from his youthful path in his late teens. He began attending open mic nights in Birmingham’s clubs and diversified his listening\, excited by some decidedly left-of-center talents. “Tom Waits and Nick Cave were the really big attractions\,” he says. “They have that passion. They’ve built this aura. They’re showmen to the teeth. And that’s what got me – it’s like going to church\, in a weird way. At about the same time\, I began listening to the great soul singers like Otis Redding\, James Carr\, and O.V. Wright. I was trying to find something that made my earbuds tingle.” Seeking his musical comfort zone\, Janeway had an incongruous stint in a band that played Led Zeppelin covers\, but\, he confesses today\, “That’s not what I do.” However\, his early work in the rock vein brought him together with bassist Jesse Phillips. The pair became close friends and were soon writing together; “Sugar Dyed\,” “Broken Bones and Pocket Change\,” and “That Glow\,” all heard on Half The City\, were among the first fruits of their collaboration. The other members of the Broken Bones are all drawn from Alabama’s deep talent pool. Guitarist Browan Lollar\, from the Muscle Shoals area about 100 miles north of Birmingham\, previously played with Jason Isbell’s 400 Unit. “We never thought Browan would ever be interested in this band – he was too big-time for us\,” says Janeway. “Jesse had met him while he was on tour with another band out of Birmingham. He asked Browan to come to the studio\, and he showed up. I think we caught him at the right time. He wasn’t busy\, and he said\, ‘Man\, I really want to be a part of this.’” Jasper\, Alabama\, native Andrew Lee signed on via his acquaintance with Phillips. “We just picked him up on the way to the studio\,” Janeway recalls. “Jesse said\, ‘I know this guy\, why don’t I just call him.’ And 30 minutes later\, he’s sitting there playing drums on ‘Sugar Dyed.’ Andrew’s just a hell of a drummer.” Brass players Allen Branstetter and Ben Griner are both graduates of the music program at Birmingham’s Samford University. Janeway says his vision of the band always called for a two-man horn section\, a la the celebrated Memphis Horns\, and he approached Griner\, although the latter’s main instrument was tuba. “I told Ben\, ‘Man\, I’ve got to have horns. Do you think you can play trombone?’ He said\, ‘I’ll give it a shot.’ And he brought Allen with him.” All six members share writing credit on 10 of the songs on Half The City\, with Janeway contributing lyrics. “We firmly believe in a shared\, communal writing process\,” the singer says. “These guys are extremely talented. The drummer wrote horn parts. Browan threw something in. It’s very collective. We just get in a room. Sometimes we’ll have the scales for a song\, or sometimes we’ll have this little riff. That’s how we do it.” In Tanner -- who logged time at Muscle Shoals’ aptly named FAME Studios\, where scores of memorable soul records were cut -- St. Paul and the Broken Bones found a like-minded producer and label boss. Half The City is among the first releases on Single Lock Records\, the imprint co-founded by Tanner\, John Paul White of the Civil Wars\, and Will Trapp “When we started getting cranked up and nobody really knew who the hell we were\, we got Ben to mix our original four-song EP\,” says Janeway. “We just hit it off. He said\, ‘Hey\, guys\, I’m in the process of starting this label. Obviously you can say no\, but we’d love for you to be a part of it.’ And we said\, ‘Hell\, yeah.’” Reaching back nearly 50 years to methods employed the great epoch of deep Southern soul\, Tanner and the group eschewed studio trickery for an in-the-moment approach during sessions at the Nutthouse in Muscle Shoals\, AL. Fittingly\, the album was mixed at FAME. Janeway explains\, “We said\, ‘We’re doing this as old-school as we can.’ We did it to tape. We did it live. What you hear is taken from about three takes\, and we took the best take. I love it. It’s raw. You hear all the scrapes.” Special guests include Al Gamble on piano\, organ and wurlitzer\, Daniel Stoddard on pedal steel\, Jamie Harper on baritone sax and Tanner on piano\, organ and background vocals. Half The City – vital\, direct\, emotionally affecting – presents the same engaged\, high-voltage\, in-the-pocket sound that St. Paul & The Broken Bones produce at their live dates\, where Janeway’s extroverted performing style enraptures his audiences. “I’m going to be dancing\, getting in the aisles\, climbing on tables\,” he says. “That’s just the way we do it. It really takes me back to church. There’s not a lot of difference. When I get on stage\, it’s\, ‘All right\, it’s time to pour it on.’” URL:http://rockandrollhoteldc.online/calendar/st-paul-the-broken-bones/ CATEGORIES:Live ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:http://rockandrollhoteldc.online/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/StPaulBrokenBones_byDaveMcClisterHiRes.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE-TIME:20140329T220000 DTEND;VALUE=DATE-TIME:20140329T220000 DTSTAMP:20140108T033047 CREATED:20131217T163250 LAST-MODIFIED:20131217T163250 UID:1043-1396130400-1396130400@http://rockandrollhoteldc.online SUMMARY:STANK DESCRIPTION:(Ed) The Metaphysical is a staple in the DC Disco scene. Produced by Tore Johannson – with whom she partnered on her now-classic 2007 debut\, Neptune City – the album is a milestone for the acclaimed singer/songwriter\, her restless creativity fully realized via the addition of some surprising colors to her already diverse paintbox. Songs like the poptastic “Girl You Look Amazing” and the sultry “Red Ropes” positively swirl with day-glo danceability\, the bright hues setting Atkins’ distinctive creative voice in a brilliant and undeniable new light. Bittersweet yet life affirming\, Slow Phaser is Nicole Atkins at her confident and unpredictable best – spirited\, sexy\, and determinedly forward thinking. “I wanted to make something that no one’s ever heard before\,” she says\, “including myself.” A charismatic and committed live performer\, Atkins followed 2011’s adventurous Mondo Amore with a long year on the road. Upon her return\, the New Jersey-based artist began to rethink her overall approach. Atkins went on creative walkabout\, visiting various musician friends across the country and starting a productive collaboration with veteran drummer/producer Jim Sclavunos (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds\, The Cramps\, Teenage Jesus & The Jerks). The two clicked immediately\, penning three songs on the very first day they set to work. “Jim really helped me articulate a lot of what I was feeling\,” she says. “He helped me make the things I was writing sound more like when I just wrote songs for myself. He taught me a lot about writing… again.” Luckily – or perhaps not – she was in Memphis when Hurricane Sandy wreaked its havoc on the Jersey Shore and her familial home. “It was awful\,” she says. “The whole first floor was flooded\, we didn’t have power for 18 days. Everything is pretty much back now\, but its different. Everybody in the town aged a lot this year.” As she pondered her next move\, fate rang long distance. Hearing of her recent travails\, her old producer Tore Johansson – known for his work with Franz Ferdinand\, The Cardigans\, and many others – invited Atkins to come record at his residential Malmö\, Sweden studio. “He said\, ‘As soon as you can get here\, get here\,’” she says. “It was the perfect double whammy. Here was someone who was going to help me make my record and give me a place to live.” Atkins packed up two years of songs\, poetry\, and journals\, not to mention the hundreds of beat-based musical ideas stored on her iPhone. With Johansson’s able assistance\, she devised a compelling new sonic approach\, melding psychedelic energy\, prog rock adventurism\, after hours disco ambience\, and the raw emotional purity of the finest country soul. Atkins stripped her traditional instrumentation to its core – Johansson handled bass duties\, joined by The Cardigans’ Lars-Olaf Johansson on guitar\, keyboardist Martin Gjerstad\, and Asbury Park’s own Sam Bey behind the drum kit – placing considerably more emphasis on electronics than on her previous recordings. “It sounds large but not cluttered\,” she says. “We only used four instruments and tracked everything live. Instead of layering on a bunch of strings and horns and bells\, the idea was to try to make everything have such complex melodies that they fit together like a puzzle. Every little bit counts.” The result is remarkably vivid and varied\, with songs like the opening “Who Killed The Moonlight?” blazing with transcendent pop hooks and floor-filling rhythms unlike anything Atkins has done before. She further pushed her songwriting by penning a series of wry\, candid songs casting a mordant eye at pretentious boyfriends (“It’s Only Chemistry”)\, ponderous hipsters (“Cool People”)\, and the endless highway that is her perpetual home (“Gasoline Bride”). Slow Phaser comes to its poignant emotional close with “The Worst Hangover” – replete with images of shattered disco balls glittering on the storm swept Jersey shoreline – and the sparse\, powerful “Above As Below\,” which finds our heroine alone at sea\, “surrendering to the void\, just me\, seagulls\, and the gods.” A committed believer in the enduring power of the album-as-art form\, Atkins embraced a classically tripartite sequencing inspired by Alejandro Jodorowsky’s notorious psychotropic western\, El Topo. “When it starts out\, the protagonist is really cocky and sure of himself and makes terrible decisions without thinking about the repercussions\,” she says. “In the second part\, he has everything taken away and is really put in his place. Then\, in the end\, he accepts it and tries to find spiritual meaning in order to be a better person.” Atkins plans to release Slow Phaser on her own Oh’Mercy! Records\, an assertion of ownership that embraces her ever fervent fanbase\, who are helping fund the project through a successful PledgeMusic campaign. In addition\, the always ambitious artist plans to indulge her defiantly prog dreams with the most theatrical live performances of her career thus far. “I’m going to wear a cape and shoot lasers out of my hands\,” she says. “Really.” Inventive and irresistible\, Slow Phaser positively radiates with idiosyncrasy and a palpable sense of fully empowered musical discovery. “It’s taken me a while to figure out who I really am\,” Nicole Atkins says. “Musically\, and as a person. It’s constantly changing. I’m not just this one character. I’m an artistic person trying to figure shit out.” URL:http://rockandrollhoteldc.online/calendar/nicole-atkins/ CATEGORIES:Live ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:http://rockandrollhoteldc.online/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/NADiscoBallFinalFlat.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE-TIME:20140425T220000 DTEND;VALUE=DATE-TIME:20140425T220000 DTSTAMP:20140108T033047 CREATED:20131223T220026 LAST-MODIFIED:20131223T220026 UID:1060-1398463200-1398463200@http://rockandrollhoteldc.online SUMMARY:BECKY w/ Trevor Martin DESCRIPTION:Born in Baltimore\, MD\, and with roots as a teen in DC's legendary punk rock scene\, Trevor Martin's skill and musical chops has garnered praise in all corners.
